Radiation oncology glossary

Radiation oncology glossary

Hi, my name is Emy and I’m studying in Radiation oncology in College Ahuntsic. I’ve been in my program for 1 year now. My glossary is for the new students in my field of study or people who are trying to learn more about it. Radiation oncology in a simpler way is how to treat cancer with radiation. Knowing the words better can help people in the program to practice in English and be better at what they do because the terms change a lot in different languages. There’ll be 10 different terms, with pictures, definitions, and pronunciations. All the definitions are on Wikipedia or Google. Now you can go see the next page.

noun
The study and treatment of tumors.
Example: Current Medication Metoclopramide - anti-emetic Co-trimaxazole - 400mg bd - anti-bacterial Prednisolone - 5mg od - (a steroid; immunosuppressant, widely used in ONCOLOGY, marked antitumour effect in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, hodgkin's &non-hodgkin's lymphoma.

photon
noun
A particle representing a quantum of light or other electromagnetic radiation. A photon carries energy proportional to the radiation frequency but has zero rest mass.
Example: Einstein explained this behaviour by saying that an electron is emitted when it absorbs a PHOTON.

Isocenter in aerial photography: it is a point where a line cuts an angle of 90 degree of tier/2.
Example: All of these movements in the modern linac occur around an axis that runs through the isocenter.

ionizing radiation
noun
Radiation consisting of particles, X-rays, or gamma rays with sufficient energy to cause ionization in the medium through which it passes.
Example: In addition to cancer inductions, ionizing radiation may have significant effects on pre-natal development and on genetic or hereditary factors.
en: radiation ionisante

metastasis
noun
The development of secondary malignant growths at a distance from a primary site of cancer.
Example: The pathologist who evaluates cancer cells in biopsied tissue designates the cancer as being stage I, II, III, or IV, in terms of the degree of metastasis.

lymphoma
